“I wanted to challenge myself to go abroad and volunteer in a completely different culture while making a positive impact on local children. I wanted an experience where I would work, focusing on people who are largely underserved and underprivileged. I decided to volunteer with CARDO and bring school supplies to children in need around the Makeni area.
I feel that I gained new knowledge and I am happy I was able to help out in such an impactful way while in Sierra Leone. Being able to help actual people, make real connections, and physically work on different projects was so meaningful. The children are amazing and just needed a little encouragement and resources, they were always so thankful and positive about the future, and always very appreciative of the support. CARDO’s work to seek out the most needy and give them a boost in the area of education filled me with pride and accomplishment that will be with me forever. I recommend this volunteer opportunity.
I was able to volunteer with CARDO for a debate and quiz competition in Makeni in 2018. 10 local schools competed, with the winners receiving tuition and supplies for three years. Watching the kids compete was great. Family, friends, teachers and classmates showed their support with applause and laughter. Overall, CARDO stressed the importance of participation for all the children and teachers present in order to foster more interest in learning and future academic success. The dropout rate of students in these areas is large, so being a part of an event that encourages engagement of pupils and teachers as well as securing future learning opportunities was a once in a lifetime experience and very rewarding. I would definitely recommend CARDO as an organization for volunteers and for general support of children in need in Sierra Leone.
I was about to drop out from school since I came from a very poor family and my parents can’t afford to pay my school fees, until when CARDO selected me as a beneficiary and started paying my fees.
Me and my family were so happy for the support since then, I am able to further my education and I can’t imagine the impact the organization have created in my life.
Life should have never been easier without the support of CARDO, I want to thank all the team at CARDO and for their tireless support towards changing vulnerable lives like mine, I appreciate their work.
"In my School, we don't have debate and quiz competition, which is why I am really excited to participate in CARDO’s program. It has been a great way to improve my public speaking skills."
There were no School at Sokoya village since founded, the children needed to walk over 7 miles to go to the nearby school posing a great fear to the parents due to the long distance so that bad things will not happen to their children.
Until when CARDO identified our community and constructed a community school.
Due to the illiteracy of the parents, they hardly send their kids to school instead they preferred sending them for farming and local mining, but through CARDO’s sensitization program, parents where been educated on the importance of sending their children to school instead of mining and farming.
Today the school can boost of over 100 kids and few pupils has recently promoted to secondary school.
All thanks to the team and may they continue to impact lives especially vulnerable children in the rural communities.
The introduction of the school partnership program by CARDO has contributed to help identified the most vulnerable children who can’t afford to pay school fees has impacted a lot of lives.
Since my school partnered with CARDO, pupils and teachers has benefited a lot through the organization’s teacher training program. Through CARDO’s debate and quiz program, Children were able to expressed themselves very well, in every competition we send them to represent our school which added to their public speaking ability. We hope CARDO will introduce this program to the School system.
